Leonard DiCaprio took home his long-awaited Oscar for Best Actor in The Revenant, and Alejandro Iñárritu took home his second in a row Best Director Oscar for the same film, but Spotlight won the top spot as Best Picture.
Host Chris Rock hit all the right notes with pointed comedy, in addressing the lack of black nominees, in an evening of expected and surprise winners.
Overall, no one film dominated the night, although Mad Max: Fury Road won six. The Revenant, a true story-inspired tale of revenge by a man left for dead in the wilderness in the early 19th century, won three Oscars, the second highest number, with a third win for Best Cinematography. Best Picture winner Spotlight, a tale of the investigative journalism that exposed the pedophile priest scandal, won only one other Oscar, for Best Original Screenplay.
The biggest surprise of the evening was Mark Rylance’s win as Best Supporting Actor in Bridge of Spies, giving Steven Spielberg’s Cold War spy thriller its only win, and shutting out expected winner Sylvester Stallone for Creed. Brie Larson won Best Actress for Room, Alicia Vikander won Best Actress for The Danish Girl, and The Big Short, a dark comedy about the 2007 real estate bubble, took Best Adapted Screenplay. Best Foreign Language Film went to Hungary’s searing Holocaust drama, Son of Saul, and Best Documentary Feature Oscar went to the moving Amy Winehouse doc, Amy. Ex Machina won Best Visual Effects and Inside Out won Best Animated Feature.
